Retaining walls in the Czech Republic

In Kunice and Benešov (Central Bohemia, Czech Republic) TenCate Geosynthetics has been involved in two projects where TenCate Miragrid® GX has been applied. The first concerned the construction of a logistics park, the second the construction of a department store. In both cases reinforced walls (retaining walls) had to be erected, and here our geogrids were the obvious solution.

TenCate Miragrid® GX products are knitted geogrids made from high-tenacity polyester yarns, with a black polymeric coating, high tensile strength, and excellent creep resistance. The material, which is available in a full range of tensile strengths, both uniaxial and biaxial, is used mainly for reinforcing retaining walls, for steep banks and slopes around artworks, or for stabilizing motorways, railways and parking lots.

The Kunice Logistics Park lies to the southeast of the capital Prague. During building, reinforced walls with a total length of 320 metres and an average height of 8.2 metres were erected – height even reached 12.5 metres in some places. Three TenCate Miragrid® GX qualities were used in this work, and the volume of the project was 210,000 m². About half the walls reinforced with TenCate geogrid were faced with concrete blocks, while the rest were faced in green. The frictional interface between TenCate Miragrid® GX geogrid and concrete blocks has ensured optimal strength mobilization and thus cost-effective design of these retaining walls.

The building of a department store for the German supermarket chain Kaufland in Benešov entailed the construction of a retaining wall 152 metres in length and an average of 4.2 metres in height. The facing of the wall was covered with concrete blocks, and the total volume of the project amounted to 23,500 m² of TenCate Miragrid® GX.

From the point of view of costs and safety, TenCate Miragrid® GX is the ideal solution for applications with – as in the Czech Republic – a non-cohesive, coarse-grained soil structure. The method of stabilizing such soil with several layers of this material has already proved its worth, and nowadays using TenCate Miragrid® GX to reinforce unstable ground of poor load-bearing capacity is accepted in geotechnical and civil engineering as a practice that is both technically and financially sound.
